Millions of views, thousands of new followers, your brand suddenly showing up on everyone’s For You Page (FYP)…but then what?

A viral post can put your brand in front of a lot of people very quickly. But that doesn’t necessarily mean those people will remember your brand or make a purchase.

When it comes to influencer marketing, we’d argue there’s something far more valuable than a viral moment: community.

Creators who have built strong communities have something brands can’t manufacture overnight. Their audiences come back, pay attention, join the conversation and trust what they have to say. That’s where a lot of the real value of influencer marketing lives.

What Does “Community” Mean in Influencer Marketing?

A creator’s community is more than their follower count. It’s the group of people who regularly watch their content, engage with it, share it, ask questions, send DMs, take recommendations and come back for more.

You can often spot a strong creator community in the comments section. Their audience is there and they’re having conversations. They know the creator’s recurring jokes, ask for recommendations and tag their friends. Sometimes, the creator knows them right back.

That relationship takes time and trust to build. It’s also one of the reasons two creators with similar follower counts can bring very different value to a brand partnership!

Virality Gets Attention but Community Builds Trust

A viral video can reach hundreds of thousands—or millions—of people who have never encountered a creator before.

That’s great if reach is the goal… but reach and influence aren’t the same thing.

Think about the difference between seeing a product recommended by a stranger who happens to show up on your FYP and seeing it recommended by a creator you’ve followed for three years. You know how the second creator talks and what they typically recommend. You’ve probably watched them love some products and dislike others. Maybe you’ve even bought something they’ve recommended before! Their opinion carries context.

That’s the advantage of community. The audience already has a relationship with the person delivering the message. For brands, that trust can be far more meaningful than briefly appearing in front of a much larger group of people.

Viral Doesn’t Always Mean Valuable

It’s easy to see a video with two million views and assume it was an incredible marketing success. And hey, maybe it was! But views alone don’t tell us that.

Did people remember the brand? Did they visit the website? Did they save the post? Did they ask questions? Did they purchase? Were the people watching even part of the brand’s target audience?

A post can go viral because it’s funny, controversial, surprising or caught the algorithm at exactly the right moment. None of those things automatically make it effective marketing.

And this is also why campaign goals matter. If your objective is broad awareness, reach and views may be incredibly valuable. If you’re trying to build credibility with a specific audience or influence consideration, a smaller but highly relevant community is probably more useful.

You Can’t Manufacture Virality

Virality should be a potential result, not something that’s baked into the strategy. Because the other thing about virality is that you can’t manufacture it.

Creators can make smart decisions based on what they know about their audience, current trends, strong hooks, platform behaviour and what’s worked for them in the past. But no creator can guarantee that a piece of content will go viral.

In some ways, virality is like winning the lottery. There are things you can do to improve your odds, but expecting it to happen isn’t a realistic campaign plan.

And when it comes to going viral, not all press is good press. Content can quickly travel beyond a creator’s usual community and reach audiences who don’t understand the context, aren’t interested in the brand or simply weren’t the intended audience. That can sometimes bring negative comments, unwanted attention or backlash for both the creator and the brand.

That’s why asking a creator to “make this go viral” isn’t a particularly useful brief. Give them a strong idea, clear objectives, creative freedom and the tools they need to make great content. Then measure success against the goals you can actually plan for.

A Smaller Audience Can Still Have a Big Impact

This is where brands sometimes get distracted by numbers.

Imagine you’re marketing a new running shoe. Creator A has 750,000 followers and creates general lifestyle content. Creator B has 45,000 followers and has spent years documenting marathon training, reviewing running gear, sharing race-day advice and talking with other runners in the comments. Who would you rather have explain why your shoe is worth trying?

There isn’t automatically one right answer! Creator A could offer a ton of brand awareness, but if your goal is to reach people actively interested in running gear then Creator B’s smaller community is likely more valuable.

That’s why we encourage brands to look beyond the biggest number on a media kit when evaluating creators. Follower count and average views still matter, but they shouldn’t be evaluated in isolation.

Community Is Built in the Comments, Too

Engagement rate is useful, but numbers don’t always capture the quality of engagement. One of the easiest ways to understand a creator’s community is also one of the simplest: read the comments. Look at what’s actually happening underneath the content.

Are followers asking questions? Are they sharing personal experiences? Are they tagging friends because the content reminded them of something? Does the creator respond? Do you see the same names coming back across different posts? Those signals can tell you a lot about whether someone has an audience or a community.

This matters when vetting creators for campaigns. A creator who regularly has meaningful conversations with their followers may be able to introduce a brand in a way that feels much more natural than someone whose audience primarily watches and scrolls on.

Creators Know Their Communities Better Than Brands Do

There’s another advantage to partnering with creators who have strong communities. They know how to talk to them.

Creators see the comments. They answer the DMs. They know which jokes will land, which questions their followers are going to ask and which types of content tend to get saved or shared. Just as importantly, they know what won’t land. They can usually spot when a brand message is going to feel forced, out of character or disingenuous—and when their audience is likely to question their content for all the wrong reasons.

That’s valuable audience insight. It’s also why overly scripted influencer content can miss the mark. A brand may know exactly what it needs to communicate, but the creator knows how that message needs to be communicated to their audience.

Give them the key messages, requirements and guardrails. Then give them enough creative freedom to translate the campaign into something their community will actually want to watch.

Community Makes Long-Term Partnerships More Valuable

Community also changes how we think about the length of a creator partnership. If a creator mentions a brand once, their audience sees an ad. But if that same brand naturally appears in the creator’s content over time, the relationship starts to feel familiar.

Audiences have time to see the product being used, hear about the creator’s experience, ask questions and encounter the brand in different contexts. The creator also gets more familiar with the product and can find increasingly natural ways to talk about it.

That’s one reason long-term creator relationships or ambassadorships can be so powerful. Instead of constantly introducing your brand to a new audience, you’re building familiarity within a community that already trusts the person telling your story.

Should Brands Stop Caring About Virality?

Nope! We’re definitely not going to pretend that we’d be disappointed if a client’s campaign suddenly got millions of views.

Virality can generate enormous awareness, introduce brands to new audiences and give campaigns momentum that would be difficult to create through paid reach alone. The problem comes when going viral becomes the definition of success. You can’t guarantee virality, and optimizing everything around the possibility of a viral moment can distract from the people you’re actually trying to reach.

A better question is: What do we want people to do after they see this content?

If the answer is remember the brand, trust the recommendation, learn something, visit a destination, consider a product or make a purchase, then community deserves a place in your strategy.

Key Takeaways

Virality can be exciting, but a million views shouldn’t automatically be considered more valuable than a smaller, highly engaged audience.

When building an influencer campaign, remember:

Reach and influence aren’t the same thing

Look beyond follower count

Let creators speak to their communities in their own way

Think beyond one post

Start with the campaign goal

At UpHouse, we’re much more interested in finding the right creator-community connection than chasing the biggest number on the screen.

Getting seen is great, but being remembered, trusted and acted on is better.

Is going viral important in influencer marketing?

Going viral can give a brand significant reach and awareness, but it isn’t the only sign of a successful influencer campaign. Depending on your goals, reaching a smaller, highly relevant community that trusts the creator may be more valuable than generating millions of views from people outside your target audience.

Can brands or influencers guarantee that content will go viral?

No. Creators can use their knowledge of their audience, platform trends, strong creative concepts and past performance to increase the chances of content performing well, but virality can’t be guaranteed.
